In the process for the preparation of fluorinated benzoic acids of the formula I <IMAGE> (I) in which X and Y, for example, independently of one another denote chlorine or fluorine and X moreover denotes bromine, a fluorinated chloroacetophenone of the formula II <IMAGE> (II) in which Z denotes chlorine or hydrogen, is reacted with a hypohalite.
