<p>Claimed is the preparation of a thermoplastic polyamide/ aromatic polyester composition by melt mixing in the presence of paratoluene sulphonic acid. The polyamide consists mainly of tetramethylene adipamide units (90-10 wt%) and the polyester is preferably a polyarylate (10-90 wt%). Mixing takes 30-300s at 300-330degC. The use of the composition is also claimed. The composition contains aromatic polyester (10-70 wt%), polyamide (90-30 wt%) and paratoluene sulphonic acid (01-5 wt%). The polyarylate is obtained from a bisphenol of general formula (I) where X is O, S, SO2,CO, alkylene or alkylidene and R1-4 and R'1-4 are each H, Cl or hydrocarbon and a tere- or isophthalic derivative. The polyamide, polyester, paratoluene sulphonic acid and any additives such as fillers, stabilisers, colorants, flame retarders etc. are dry mixed prior to melt mixing in an extruder or other mixer. Mixing is done under dry N2 at elevated temps. The composition is obtained as granules by cooling the melt as it leaves the equipment. The granules can then be used for injection molding.</p> |
