A medical lancet unit comprises a moulded lancet-retaining member having a main body section adapted to be held between the fingers and a cap section integrally formed with the main body section. Fixedly mounted in and completely encased by the retaining member is a lancet member having a sterile pointed end section which extends beyond the end of the main body section and which is sealably engaged and enclosed by the cap section. The cap section is sealably connected with the main body section by a frangible section which can be readily severed to separate the cap section from the main body section to expose the pointed end section of the lancet member. As illustrated in Figure 1, lancet-retaining member 10 has a cylindrical main body section 11 moulded about a lancet 20 which comprises a cylindrical rod 21 having a pointed end 22. The main body section has cylindrical end sections 12 and 13 connected by a small diameter cylindrical section 14 and a plurality, for example four disposed at 90‹, of longitudinal ribs 15, two of which have one or more narrow transverse slots 16. A transverse end wall 17 adjacent the pointed end of the lancet provides an abutment to limit penetration of the lancet, the pointed end of which preferably is provided with one or more sharp cutting edges and extends by about one-eighth inch beyond the abutment. The cap section 30, which is sealably joined to the main body section by frangible section 35, preferably has parallel oppositely disposed lateral wall surfaces which provide a flat cap section adapted to be readily held for application of a severing force to remove the cap section from the main body section. Figures 10 and 11 (not shown) illustrate two modified lancet units in each of which the lancet member does not directly contact the entire length of the main body section. The lancet member preferably is formed of stainless steel wire; the retaining member preferably is formed of plastics material, for example polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene or polypropylene.
