876,299. Filters. GLACIER METAL CO. Ltd. Oct. 12, 1959 [Dec. 11, 1958], No. 34472/59. Class 46. [Also in Group II] Unfiltered liquid (e.g. lubricating oil) entering at 18 passes up a passage 19 and between the annular plates of an edge filter 1 which may be cleaned by rotatior against scraper blades 2. The filtrate passes downwards along a passage 20 and may continue e wholly through a port 21 to a point of use (e.g. bearings) ; if its pressure is high enough, however, some of the filtrate opens a valve 22 and enters the rotor 4 of a conventional centrifugal filter via a passage 28 and hollow bearing 7. Centrifuged oil emerging at nozzles 9 spins the rotor and flows at 17 to a sump. At a pressure of the filtrate in passage 20 high enough to open a valve 25, excess filtrate flows direct to port 17, Filter 1, and filter 1 and centrifuge 4 together, are successively bypassed at 23 and 24 respectively, on clogging of filter 1 and on attainment of excessive inlet pressure at 18, respectively. In Fig. 2 (not shown) an edge filter is disposed below the centrifuge, and in Fig. 3 (not shown), a cylindrical mesh filter surrounds the centrifuge.
