Automatic sorting equipment consisting of a first conveying system (4,5,6) comprising detectors for detecting the relevant distinguishing feature of the products (2), followed by a second conveying system having devices for sorting said products according to said distinguishing feature. The sorting devices include at least one trap device (7) which is movable between an inoperative position in which it lies in the conveying plane (1) and an operative position in which it lies outside said plane to discharge the products. Said equipment comprises devices for adjusting the opening angle and/or the opening time of the trap device (7) according to the bulkiness of the product to be discharged, thus enabling the upstream feed rate to be optimized.
