PURPOSE:To elevate a heater temperature efficiently in a short time by a method wherein a first and a second accumulating units are connected in parallel for current application when a small power is required as a power for the heater and the respective accumulating units are connected in series when a large power is required. CONSTITUTION:If the temperature of a catalyst is normal and a temperature signal T does not indicate a low temperature state, a current application control signal C from a control circuit 6A shows an opening instruction and a current application switch 5 is opened. On the other hand, if the catalyst temperature is declined and the temperature signal T indicates a low temperature state, the control circuit 6A outputs the current application control signal C to close the current application switch 5. If the catalyst temperature is very low and a high power is required for a heater 3, a changeover switch 8 is changed over to connect a battery 2 and an auxiliary battery 7 in series. With this constitution, if the output voltages of the respective batteries 2 and 7 are 12V, a high voltage of 24V is applied to the heater 3 and the temperature of the heater 3 is elevated in a short time. |
