Tetravalent or pentavalent Nb cpds. (I) are used as active ingredient for preparing medicaments useful in the treatment and/or prevention of disorders of sugar and/or lipid metabolism. (I) are pref. (a) inorganic cpds., esp. water-soluble cpds. giving solns. with a pH of 3-9, esp. ca. 7, or (b) organic salts or complexes, esp. contg. at least one electron-donating function as heteroatom. Pref. complexes contain a ligand having at least one free electron pair, esp. inositol, inositol phosphates, amino acids (esp. proline), pyrocatechol, dithiocarbamic acids, or cpds. with a ring contg. at least two N atoms. (I) are esp. pentavalent Nb cpds.
