PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compound having improved selectivity of the objective compound from resorcinol and increased yield, suitable as a raw material for coloring dye useful for pressure-sensitive copying paper, heat- sensitive recording paper, etc., having a low content of impurities and high qualities. CONSTITUTION:In producing a compound of formula II by reacting (A) resorcinol with (B) an amine of formula I (R<1> and R<2> are H or 1-8C alkyl or alkenyl which may contain side chain or cycloalkyl which may contain substituent group with the proviso that R<1> and R<2> are not H at the same time) in the presence of (C) zinc chloride preferably in (D) an organic solvent having >=160 deg.C boiling point, first the components A and C are heated to >=160 deg.C (preferably 165-180 deg.C in the case of using the component D and 170-210 deg.C in the case of not using the component D) and the component B is added. In the operation, 50-80%, preferably 60-70% based on the whole amount added of the component B (1.0-2.0mol, preferably 1.1-1.5mol based on 1mol component A) is added within 1/3 total addition time (1-10 hours, preferably 3-8 hours) to advantageously give the objective compound. |
