A chewing gum composition is provided which contains, as sweetening agent, a mixture of erythritol and a liquid sugar or liquid sugar alcohol other than erythritol wherein the amount of erythritol in the mixture is at least 60% by weight. The chewing gum composition has a low calorific content and very low cariogenicity.
