PURPOSE:To industrially and advantageously obtain a 2-azetidinone derivative useful as an intermediate for producing a carcinostatic agent, an enzyme inhibitor, a recognizing substance between cells, etc., by reacting a specific 3-sulfinyl-2- azetidinone compound with a carboxylic acid anhydride. CONSTITUTION:A compound of formula I [R1 is amino-protecting group; R2 is (substituted) lower alkyl, (substituted) aryl, (substituted) aralkyl, lower alkoxycarbonyl, carboxy, carbamoyl, etc.; Ph is phenyl] [e.g. 3,4-trans-4- acetoxymethyl-4-acetoxymethyl-3-benzenesulfinyl-1-di(p-anisyl)methyl-2- azetidinone] is reacted with a carboxylic acid anhydride of formula II (R is lower alkyl) (e.g. acetic anhydride) to give the objective 2-azetidinone derivative of formula III [e.g. 3,4-trans-4-acetoxymethyl-3-acetoxy-3-phenylthio-1-di(p-anisyl) metyl-2-azetidinone]. |
