PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a white balance controller capable of performing white balance control with high accuracy without depending upon a zooming position of a photographic lens and the type of a light source for illuminating a field, and an image pickup apparatus. SOLUTION: The white balance controller (11 to 23) is provided with a calculating means (19) for calculating a white balance control value of a color image photographed through a photographic lens (11), and a correcting means (19) for correcting the white balance control value calculated by the calculating means (19) in accordance with the zooming position of the photographic lens (11). The correcting means (19) changes a correction amount of correction in accordance with the type of a light source for illuminating a field. The white balance controller (11 to 23) is also provided with a determining means (19) for determining the type of the light source for illuminating a field on the basis of a color image photographed through the photographic lens (11), and the determining means (19) changes a reference in determination in accordance with the zooming position of the photographic lens (11).
