PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vibration damping device capable of correcting a shift of a neutral position of a movable element by auxiliary mass' own weight. SOLUTION: The vibration damping device comprises: a stator 12; a movable element 13 having an iron member 30 and disposed to be reciprocable with respect to the stator 12; the movable element 13 having one end joined with an auxiliary mass member W; permanent magnets 14, 16 opposed to the iron member 30 and orthogonal to the direction of reciprocating motion to provide magnetic polarities, and disposed at the stator 12 along the direction of the reciprocating motion; a movable element support means supporting the movable element 13 by a spring element; coils 18, 19 disposed at the stator 12; and a control means controlling an electric current applied to the coils 18, 19 to suppress the vibration of an object to be damped by using a reaction force when the auxiliary member W is driven. The permanent magnets 14, 16 are disposed to be close to the upper side of an axial position in a reciprocating range of the iron member 30, are not arranged on a lower side, so that a magnetomotive force is unsymmetrically generated.
