PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a longitudinal looper capable of easily changing the foil-passing mode of a metal foil of the extensive thickness range according to its thickness, and correcting the meandering thereof, and its operating method. SOLUTION: The longitudinal looper 10 comprises a plurality of fixed rolls 12 arranged with a space in the advancing direction of a metal foil 11, and a plurality of elevating/lowering rolls 15 arranged on supporting members 14 projecting to a frame 13 elevating/lowering with respect to the fixed rolls 12. In a state A in which each elevating/lowering roll 15 passes through the space between the fixed rolls 12, the metal foil 11 can travel between the plurality of fixed rolls 12 and the plurality of elevating/lowering rolls 15. In a state B in which the frame 13 is separated from the fixed rolls 12, the metal foil 11 is stretched in a zigzag manner between each fixed roll and each elevating/lowering roll 15. A meandering correction mechanism 16 is provided to the position not abutted on the elevating/lowering roll 15 passed through the space between the fixed rolls 12, which draws out the metal foil 11 from the space between the adjacent elevating/lowering rolls 15 to adjust the meandering of the metal foil 11.
