<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively improve the contrast, for example, on an optical compensation plate used in a liquid crystal device. <P>SOLUTION: The optical compensation plate (100) has a transparent support plate (110) such as a glass plate, and a compensating layer (120) formed on this support plate to compensate the retardation of the input light. The compensating layer is formed by extending a material of a molecular structure having negative optical anisotropy.
