This invention relates to a process for the production of hydrogen and methane from wastewater streams and, more particularly, to the treatment of wastewater so as to facilitate the production of hydrogen and methane in a fluidised bed biofilm reactor. The process makes use of heating to inactivate pathogens in the wastewater and an elevated temperature in the fluidised bed biofilm reactor to facilitate biogas production by anaerobic thermophilic bacteria. The incoming wastewater stream is heated, at least in part, by combusting the biogas produced by the reactor. The invention also relates to an improved fluidised bed biofilm reactor. |
