PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably produce in high productivity a polymer with a specific molecular weight by subjecting an emulsified mixture containing 30-50 mass% of a vinyl monomer to polymerization reaction with suppressed peak temperature in the polymerization and without increasing the occurrence of cullets. SOLUTION: A method for producing the polymer comprises subjecting an emulsified mixture containing 30-50 mass% of a vinyl monomer to polymerization reaction in the presence of a radical polymerization initiator. In this process, an inert gas is introduced into the emulsified mixture at least from charging the radical polymerization initiator to a point when the polymerization conversion of the vinyl monomer comes to 2-50% to suppress the peak temperature coming in the polymerization reaction.
