The disclosure relates to a method for operation of a functionally modular automation device having a control loop, which device is connected to a feed line whose power is limited. It is proposed that the criterion for activation or deactivation of functional modules of the device is derived from the control error (x<SUB>w</SUB>). The functionally modular automation device having a control loop is also disclosed.
