The method involves executing shifting up of an actual gear into a target gear with a steep number of speed gradients. An auxiliary consumer of a motor vehicle is actively switched during execution of shifting up, where the consumer makes a brake torque on a drive train. The consumer is switched actively during shifting up and during motor braking of the drive train when the power engine is in overrun fuel cut-off state. The consumer is actively switched as an electric generator and/or an air-conditioning compressor.
