A process for the production of porous silicon carbide sintered compacts with desired pore sizes of small dispersion which comprises the forming step of forming a raw material composition comprising silicon carbide powder, silicon powder, and a binder as the essential components into a silicon carbide compact, the cleaning step of subjecting the silicon carbide compact to cleaning to form a silicon carbide cleaned compact, and the firing step of subjecting the cleaned compact to firing to form a porous silicon carbide sintered compact, characterized in that the content of the silicon powder in the raw material composition is 1 to 3% by weight based on the total amount of the silicon carbide powder and the silicon powder and that the firing in the firing step is conducted at such a temperature as to form interparticulate necks through the interdiffusion of silicon carbide particles.
|
