PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique for manufacturing an optically active α-amino acid derivative, which does not require external addition of a base.

SOLUTION: A catalyst for producing the optically active α-amino acid derivative has M(OR1)2(M represents an alkali earth metal element and R1represents an alkyl group) and a ligand bonded to M of M(OR1)2, and a compound constituting the ligand is a compound having a biaryl skeleton or a bisoxazoline skeleton.
