<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of setting the operation or non-operation of a cartridge being a consumable item of low-price version. <P>SOLUTION: An ordinary toner cartridge and a low-price version toner cartridge supplied by the same manufacturer of the ordinary one can be attached to the image forming apparatus. The image forming apparatus can take a first state and a second state. In the first state, an apparatus status recording memory stores "00" for allowing the operation of the ordinary toner cartridge attached but limiting the operation of the low-price version toner cartridge attached.
