<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus for outputting a high-quality image by balancing reproducibility and gradation property. <P>SOLUTION: In the image forming apparatus, an image pattern is formed on a photoreceptor and transfer material, and environmental contrast potential to be set is adjusted based on information on the image pattern read by a reading means. Necessary contrast potential for obtaining maximum density is adjusted by the use of a density correction table. Then, the apparatus is equipped with a calculation means for calculating the necessary contrast potential, a comparison means for comparing the necessary contrast potential calculated by the calculation means with the environmental contrast potential, and a setting means for setting the environmental contrast potential based on a result of comparison by the comparison means.
