PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a unit or the like which detects the existence of an object with high accuracy in an image obtained through an onboard infrared imaging unit, by discriminating the object such as a pedestrian from a building or the like on the background thereof. SOLUTION: As a result of A/D conversion targeted at different luminance areas of an infrared image imaged by an infrared camera 102, a first and a second grayscale images are generated. Based on a measured outside air temperature T based on the output of a thermal sensor 108, one of the first and the second grayscale images is selected. Further, by performing binarization processing of the selected grayscale image, a binary image is generated, and the object is extracted from the above binary image. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
