PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a microscope capable of automatically setting transmitted illumination, epi-illumination, or transmitted epi-illumination even when a connected illuminating device is changed, while minimizing the number of control ports for an illuminating device. SOLUTION: The microscope includes: the plurality of illuminating devices 3 and 4; the plurality of control ports 18 and 19 to which the illuminating devices 3 and 4 are attached; an operating means 2 for operating the illuminating devices; a detecting means 1 for identifying the illuminating devices connected to at least the two control ports and for detecting whether they have been attached or not; and a control means for permitting observation in different illuminating methods by using one of the illuminating devices, for automatically setting the illuminating devices to the different illuminating methods based on information on the illuminating devices detected by the detecting means and illuminating method information stored in the control means, and for permitting operation by the operating means.
