PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control system for an internal combustion engine provided with a supercharger with an assist mechanism wherein antiknock quality and responsivity to supercharge are made favorably compatible with each other irrespective of variations in control which are caused by difference in individual parts and secular change in the supercharging system. SOLUTION: An ignition-timing correction is made to a base ignition-timing which is predetermined on the basis of the knocking detection or predicted information. When a post-correction ignition-timing shows a value on the advance side of the base ignition-timing, a MAT power restriction coefficient K is corrected on (made to learn) the increase side in order to adjust the assist power to be provided to a MAT 26, thus to increase the supercharge assist controlled variable. When the post-correction ignition-timing shows a value on the retard side of the base ignition-timing, the MAT power restriction coefficient K is corrected (learned) on the decrease side, thus to decrease the supercharge assist controlled variable.
