A device and a method for guiding the amount of detergent to be injected to a washing tub of a washing machine are provided to improve endurance of the washing machine and prevent damage to the laundry caused by an excessive amount of detergent. A device for guiding the amount of detergent of a washing machine comprises a detergent box(110), a weight sensing unit, and a display unit. The detergent box is marked with a proper amount of detergent in several stages according to volume of laundry. The weight sensing unit senses the weight of laundry contained in a washing tub. The display unit displays at least one of the sensed weight of laundry and the amount of detergent that is determined in accordance with the sensed weight of laundry.
