PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carbon nanotube composite utilizing carbide-derived carbon, its production method, an electron emission source containing it, and an electron emission device provided with the electron emission source.

SOLUTION: This carbon nanotube composite is obtained by the steps of producing carbide-derived carbon by reacting a carbide compound with a halogen group element-containing gas; extracting residual elements other than carbon in the carbide compound; and reacting a metal carried by the carbide-derived carbon or a metal remaining in the carbide-derived carbon with a carbon source, where the carbon nanotube composite comprises the carbide-derived carbon and carbon nanotubes grown therefrom.
