<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve energy density of a negative electrode material. <P>SOLUTION: A negative electrode material made from nanoparticles is provided, and the negative electrode material includes a homogeneous mixture of lithium-alloying nanoparticles with active support matrix nanoparticles. The active support matrix nanoparticle is a compound that participates in a conversion reaction of a lithium battery. The compound is preferably a transition metal compound, and the compound includes a nitride, carbide, oxide or combination thereof. An electrode manufactured from the negative electrode material preferably has a porosity of 5-80% and more preferably has a porosity of 10-50%.
