<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve display contrast by lowering a black level in a normally black mode TN liquid crystal display device. <P>SOLUTION: The normally black mode TN liquid crystal display device has a TN liquid crystal layer 5 held between an upper glass substrate 3 and a lower glass substrate 4, and an upper polarizing plate 1 and a lower polarizing plate 2 respectively arranged, on the outside of the upper glass substrate 3 and the lower glass substrate 4, with their absorption axes or transmission axes kept parallel to each other. Micro retardation plates 6, 7 are respectively disposed between the respective polarizing plates 1, 2 and between the upper glass substrate 3 and the lower glass substrate 4 in such a way that angles between their respective slow axes 6d, 7d and a long axis direction of a liquid crystal molecule 5c at the center of the thickness direction of the TN liquid crystal layer 5 are less than ±45°, or preferably ±15° or less. A pair of plastic substrates doing double duty of the glass substrates 3, 4 and the micro retardation plates 6, 7 is optionally used. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT |
