<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a write once-type optical recording medium with a recording layer which shows successful data recording/regeneration properties by laser beams of the blue wavelength range (350 to 500 nm), especially, laser beams of the wavelength close to 405 nm, and can record data in high density, with higher recording sensitivity, compared with a conventional optical recording medium, and a sputtering target for forming the recording layer. <P>SOLUTION: (1) This write once-type optical recording medium has a recording layer containing at least, a Bi oxide and not less than a kind of element M (provided, however, that Bi, C and N are excluded) unit which can boost the photoabsorption function to data recording/regeneration laser beams, as main components, on the base. Thus, the optical recording medium can record/regenerate data by laser beams of the blue wavelength range. Alternatively, (2) the recording medium has a recording layer containing at least, a Bi oxide and a less than a kind of element M (provided, however, that Bi, C and N are excluded) unit which can boost the photoabsorption function to the data recording/regeneration laser beams and the element M oxide, as main components, on the base.
