PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which reads an image with excellent image quality without delaying an initial operation when performing next reading operation using a reading unit that has not been used in the last reading operation. SOLUTION: A controller 400 instructs dust avoiding operation to a reader section 200 during job execution (S6) and the reader section 200 performs the dust avoiding operation between paper sheets. When the end of the job is detected, the controller 400 instructs the dust avoiding operation to both the reader section 200 and a document rear-side reading section 17 that has not been used (S8), and the reader section 200 and the document rear-side reading section 17 perform the dust avoiding operation. Furthermore, the controller 400 instructs shading correcting operation to both the reader section 200 and the document rear-side reading operation 17, and the reader section 200 and the document rear-side reading section 17 perform the shading correcting operation.
