The transmission i.e. planetary transmission (14), has torque transmitting mechanisms (80, 82, 84, 85, 56) e.g. clutch, for interconnecting a sun gear (22), a ring gear (24) and a planet carrier assembly (26) of a planetary gear set (20) with sun gear (32), a ring gear (34) and a planet carrier assembly (36) of a planetary gear set (30). The mechanisms are engaged in combinations of three to establish eight forward speed ratios and one reverse speed ratio between an input (17) and an output (19). One of the sun gear, ring gear and assembly of one set is connected with a stationary member.
