PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inhibit deterioration of combustion when fuel properties change. SOLUTION: An internal combustion engine 1 is provide with an intake air cooling device 4, and air A of which temperature raised by compression in a compressor 3C of a supercharger 3 is introduced into a cylinder 1S after cooling. A second passage 2b provided at an outlet side of the compressor 3C branches to an intake air cooling device inlet passage 4a and an intake air cooling means bypass passage 5 at an upstream side of the intake air cooling device 4. An intake air cooling device outlet passage 4b and the intake air cooling means bypass passage 5 merge to a third air passage 2c at a downstream side of the intake air cooling device 4. A bypass air flow rate adjusting valve 10 is provided in the intake air cooling means bypass passage 5, flow rate of air A passing through the intake air cooling device 4 is adjusted according to fuel properties.
