PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To coat a substrate with a coating liquid in a constant and uniform thickness when intermittently coating the traveling substrate with the coating liquid from a coating die. SOLUTION: When intermittently supplying the coating liquid 12 from a discharge port 11 provided on the tip end surface 10a of the coating die 10 to intermittently coat the traveling sheet-like substrate 1 with the coating liquid, at the time when starting the supply of the coating liquid to the substrate from the coating die, the step of traveling the coating die in the same direction as the substrate, and the step of stopping this coating die or traveling the die in the opposite direction against the substrate to coat the traveling substrate with the coating liquid from this coating die, and at the time when stopping the supply of the coating liquid to the substrate from this coating die, the step of traveling this coating die in the same direction as the substrate are performed.
