PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method detecting membrane breakage in water treatment using a porous membrane. SOLUTION: In the membrane damage detecting method performing a membrane moisturizing process bringing at least one face of the membrane into contact with liquid, and a differential pressure measuring process wherein the other face of the membrane is pressurized with gas succeeding to the moisturizing process, a pressure difference between both faces of the membrane is detected to detect the damage of the membrane, the differential pressure measuring process performs: an air injection process for injecting gas to one side of the membrane for pressurizing; a primary decision process for performing the primary decision of presence/no presence of the membrane damage after a prescribed time from the start of the air injection process in parallel with the air injection process, and transmitting signals of informing presence of the membrane damage and immediately stopping the differential pressure measuring process, when it is decided that the membrane damage is present; and a secondary decision process for transmitting signals of informing the presence of damage when the pressure difference is smaller than a predetermined pressure difference threshold after a prescribed time from the time when the pressurizing side has risen to a prescribed pressure lower than a bubble point, succeeding to the primary decision process.
