PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element having a satisfactory display quality and video display characteristics while a cost is suppressed. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display element is provided with counter projections 42 forming a plurality of domains D1, D2 having different tilt directions of liquid crystal molecules LC when applying a voltage between a pixel electrode 19 and a counter electrode on each pixel region AP. The respective domains D1, D2 are provided with low pretilt angle regions 47 which are smaller in the pretilt angles of the liquid crystal molecules LC than the other regions. The response characteristics of the liquid crystal molecules LC of the respective domains D1, D2 of the pixel regions AP are improved by a low pretilt angle region 47 so that the satisfactory display quality and video display characteristics are assured while the cost is suppressed.
