PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader and an image forming apparatus where entire surface of a sheet can be uniformly pressed without necessitating special operation and strong force. SOLUTION: After a sheet pressing part 100 is opened and a sheet Sb is placed on a platen glass 202, the sheet pressing part 100 is closed to read the image of the sheet Sb in such a state that the sheet Sb is pressed from above. When the sheet pressing part 100 is to be closed to press the sheet Sb, the sheet pressing part 100 is made to ascend to a position in accordance with the height of the sheet Sb detected by a height detection part, and when the detection is made that the sheet pressing part 100 is closed after it is made to ascend, the sheet pressing part 100 is made to descend in such a state that the sheet pressing part 100 is closed.
