PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fibroin sponge substance of a uniform structure with the excellent performance of rapidly absorbing a liquid such as water dropped or adhered to its surface. SOLUTION: The fibroin sponge substance includes a surface layer made of a fibroin sponge and a sponge portion to be surface-contacted with the rear side of the surface layer. The sponge portion is made of a fibroin sponge of a porous structure rougher than the surface layer. In the preparation process, a fibroin sponge substance is obtained by freezing to a temperature lower than -5°C a fibroin solution including a fibroin, a water-soluble organic solvent and water stored in a container so as to obtain a hydrogel substance and drying the same. The container has an inner wall made of a metal substance having a thermal diffusion coefficient value smaller than 1.0×10<SP>-6</SP>with a porous surface layer formed thereon.
