PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a polyvinyl pyrrolidone of relatively low molecular weight by conducting a polymerization reaction of monomer components including vinyl pyrrolidone in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, a metal catalyst, ammonia and/or an amine compound, while suppressing the polyvinyl pyrrolidone's discoloration under polymerization or storage. SOLUTION: The method for producing the polyvinyl pyrrolidone comprises conducting a polymerization reaction of monomer components including vinyl pyrrolidone in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, a metal catalyst, ammonia and/or an amine compound.
