A protocol converter for a substation automation system is provided to support various IEDs irrespective of an IEC-61850 communication scheme by converting output data of the IED to IEC-61850-compatible data. A protocol converting unit for a substation automation system includes two serial I/O ports(2,3) and a protocol converter(6). The protocol converter converts output data from an IED(Intelligent Electronic Device)(8), which fails to support an IEC-61850 communication protocol, to the data compatible to IEC(International Engineering consortium)-61850 communication protocol. The protocol converter includes first and second communication units(4,5). The first communication unit communicates with the IED and transmits and receives the data through the serial I/O port. The second communication unit transmits and receives the data to and from a substation automation system through an optical communication network.
