PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an industrially suitable simple method for producing a (S)-5-substituted-5-hydroxy-3-oxopentanoate derivative obtaining a (S)-5-substituted-5-hydroxy-3-oxopentanoate derivative of high purity at a high isolated yield. SOLUTION: The method for preparing a (S)-5-substituted-5-hydroxy-3-oxopentanoate derivative is characterized by causing an aldehyde compound and diketene to react with each other in an organic solvent in the presence of an amine and a titanium complex obtained by causing an optically active Schiff's base and a titanium compound to react with each other.
