SCRIBING DEVICE AND SCRIBING METHOD

A scribing device which can attain deep penetration while suppressing damage on the surface of a work. The scribing device comprises a table (1) for securing at least a part on one of the sides sandwiching a portion of the work (W) where a scribe line (L) is to be cut and keeping the other side of the work (W) in cantilever state; and relative moving mechanisms (3, 6) for abutting a cutter (10) against the portion, which is to have the scribe line (L) cut and is floating in the air, moving the cutter (10) relatively to the work (W) along the portion where the scribe line is to be cut, and cutting the scribe line (L) in the work (W). A force for controlling the vector of a force required for growing a vertical crack (a force in the direction intersecting the scribe line perpendicularly within the surface of the work (W)) does not act when the other side of the work (W) is released. Consequently, vertical crack can grow easily and growth of horizontal crack can be suppressed.
