A glass container having a convex curved base portion is of thin-walled construction, e.g. of a wall thickness of 0�035-0�050 inch, and is supported by a base member 42 of a material less frangible than that of the container. The container may be filled with a pressurized liquid, e.g. beer, a carbonated beverage, or an aerosol; and may have a metallic closure (13), Fig. 2 (not shown), having a tab attached to a tear-out portion (13b) of the closure. The closure may have a liner of polyethylene, Fig. 4, and the tab may extend laterally, Fig. 5 (not shown). The base member 42 may be of thermoplastic material, paper, pulp, plastisol, foamed plastics or a thermosetting plastics, and have a side wall portion for carrying advertising or decorative matter. The base member may be heat-shrunk on to the container or be bonded to it by an adhesive. The base member may have a wall 42a which is corrugated to reduce the area of contact with the container. The glass may be soda-lime glass. |
