The method involves determining a motor vehicle position under consideration of received position signals i.e. global positioning system (GPS) signals. A tunnel mode of a display device i.e. LCD screen, is activated automatically by a display controller in a direct or temporally delayed manner when the determined motor vehicle position exhibits a tunnel attribute and the received position signals fall below a predetermined signal quality. An adjustment of the display device is activated by the display controller after the deactivation of the tunnel mode.
