A fuel cell system in which system efficiency can be enhanced by avoiding damage to a circulation pump at low temperatures. The fuel cell system comprises a fuel gas circulation system having a circulation passage for recirculating fuel off gas discharged from a fuel cell to the fuel cell, and a circulation pump for pressure feeding fuel off gas in the circulation passage, a controller for controlling driving of the circulation pump wherein the controller stops driving of the circulation pump at a predetermined low temperature. With such an arrangement, damage to the circulation pump can be avoided at low temperatures even if the circulation pump is frozen because driving of the circulation pump is stopped at a predetermined low temperature. System efficiency can be enhanced because scavenging processing is not necessarily required and power loss of the circulation pump does not occur at a predetermined low temperature. |
