A method for making oxygen-sensitive heterogeneous catalysts (I) inert towards oxygen involves wetting the surface of the catalyst with an ionic liquid (II). An independent claim is included for heterogeneous catalysts which are not sensitive to oxygen, comprising oxygen-sensitive heterogeneous catalysts the surface of which is wetted with an ionic liquid.
