Method and system for cold start and idle of an internal combustion engine

The method involves maintaining a quantity of exhaust combustion gas in a combustion chamber (11) of a direct injection diesel type internal combustion engine (10) during a combustion phase of the engine. The gas quantity is maintained by a forced circulation of the gas in an intake circuit (20) of the engine using an exhaust combustion gas circulation unit, during an exhaust phase and by the readmission of the gas in the chamber during an intake phase. The forced circulation of the gas is realized by the control of an opening of the circuit using a control unit, during the exhaust phase. An independent claim is also included for a system for cold starting and idling of a direct injection diesel type internal combustion engine of a vehicle.
