The transmitter (20) and the receiver (50) of a fiber optical link (1) for transmitting digital data (DS) from a first device (14) to a second device (12) are designed to operate in a first, high-power/ high-speed, mode and in a second, low-power/ low-speed mode for transmitting and receiving high-speed data signals (DS h ) and low-speed data signals (DS l ), respectively.
