A cathode for a lithium secondary battery is provided to realize excellent thermal safety and lifespan characteristics at a high voltage by inhibiting side reactions between a cathode active material and an electrolyte. A cathode for a lithium secondary battery comprises: a collector; and a cathode active material layer formed on the collector, and comprising a cathode active material containing a core formed of a compound represented by the formula of LiaCo1-bMbO2 and a surface treatment layer formed on the core. The surface treatment layer comprises P as a first element, and a second element selected from the group consisting of Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Ra, Sc, Y, Ti, Zr, Hf, Rf, V, Nb, Ta, Db, Cr, Mo, W, Sg, Tc, Re, Bh, Fe, Ru, Os, Hs, Rh, Ir, Pd, Pt, Cu, Ag, Au, Zn, Cd, B, Al, Ga, In, Ti, Si, Ge, Sn, P, As, Sb, Bi, S, Se, Te, Po, and a combination thereof. In the formula, a is 0.95-1.1; b is greater than 0.002 and equal to or less than 0.02; M is a third element selected from the group consisting of Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Ra, Sc, Y, Ti, Zr, Hf, Rf, V, Nb, Ta, Db, Cr, Mo, W, Sg, Tc, Re, Bh, Fe, Ru, Os, Hs, Rh, Ir, Pd, Pt, Cu, Ag, Au, Zn, Cd, B, Al, Ga, In, Tl, Si, Ge, Sn, P, As, Sb, Bi, S, Se, Te, Po, and a combination thereof. |
