The invention provides a universal charging device, an arrangement therewith and a method of charging a battery. The universal charging device comprises a voltage converter (101,102,103,104) being connected to the battery (300) and having a switching element (101), for applying a direct voltage to said battery (300), a controller (200) connected to the voltage converter (101,102,103,104), wherein the controller (200) is arranged to measure a charging current flowing to the battery (300), and to control the switching element (101) on a pulse-width-modulation basis.
